This past fall I was lucky enough to witness Incubus for the second time in my life. I say witness because watching Brandon Boyd is a religious experience…He even looks like Jesus, crossed with Swayze in “Point Break”.
My first experience was at Pine Knob Music Theatre, now DTE Energy Music Amphitheatre in Clarkston, MI. “Make Yourself” tour (2000) at Ozzfest. “The Roots” had played their entire set as a steady rain fell, and temps were in the mid-90’s. The water stopped, steam rose from the crowd. The sun came out at the exact same time as Incubus opened with “Privilege”. One of the best days I’ve experience on earth.
“Make Yourself” was the pinnacle of Incubus, not to take anything away from other albums like S.C.I.E.N.C.E and Morning View. Every song on the album is beyond good. “Drive” was the commercial hit that launched the band, and the chorus impossible not to sing-along to in the car. “Stellar”, “Pardon Me” and “Consequence” were and still are on high replay at my house.
My expectations for the evening some twenty years later was just maybe hear a couple of those songs off “Make Yourself”. They played an entire tribute to the album. Every song, in order, straight through. Absolutely epic. Incubus is one of the few bands who sound even better live. Two decades later, the same euphoric emotional eruption that is “Incubus” is still intact, and will never be “Just a Phase”.
In no particular order…..
- “Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)” – S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
- “Stellar” – Make Yourself
- “Dig” – Light Grenades
- “Nice to Know You” – Morning View
- “Nebula” – S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
- Privilege” – Make Yourself
- “Just a Phase” – Morning View
- “Consequence” – Make Yourself
- “Wish You Were Here” – Morning View
- “Megalomaniac” – A Crow Left of The Murder
Tonights evening setlist was inspired by Incubus, a true innovator in meticulous chaos. Megalomaniac Mussels in white wine butter sauce, Fungus Amongus Risotto with goat cheese, and Anti-Gravity Gorgonzola Bruschetta.
