Thirty years ago, the world was introduced to Calvin Broadus Jr. aka Snoop Dogg, as prescribed by Dr. Dre’s The Chronic in 1992. A true lyricist who lived the stories being told, added dimensions of realism that were vindicated by time as they became highlights of the golden era of hip-hop. His silky-smooth flow combined with a unique twisting of words soon became not only his trademark style but also a recognized variation of the English language.
His brilliance was first embraced by cousin Nate Dogg who introduced him to the doctor and the rest is a hazy history of hits, both as a team and solo. Snoop’s debut album Doggystyle went quadruple platinum and is now recognized as the first ray of sun during the dawn of gangster-rap. Fast forward three decades to a live Vs. battle with the late, great DMX where fans witnessed a legitimate wrinkle in the fabric of space and time. The contest turned quickly into a showcase of how ageless, seamless, ain’t nobody seen this Snoop still is as he flawlessly executed every song as if a day hadn’t passed since 93.

The catalogue of songs through the years equally as impressive as the performance, three decades worth of hits, collaborations with various artists and genres but never straying from his LBC roots. His varied extracurricular activities from football to acting to cannabis have never interfered with where music ranked priority wise, evident by the crispness of his delivery even now at the age of 50. The recent acquisition of the record label he helped build, Death Row Records, cements his legacy as the Dogg-Father of rap and ensures the masters of Tupac, Dre, Nate, and himself will remain on the west coast forever.

Booked as the halftime show in the city where it all started for them, this Sunday the Rams won’t be the only ones with home field advantage at the Sizzle-Bizzle as Snoop and fellow Cali native Dre along with their protégé Marshall, prepare to again shake up the state that’s as untouchable as Elliot Ness.
